Kristie's Nest

I first took an interest in all things birth over twenty-five years ago, when I considered midwifery as a career. Marriage and eight children later, I am not yet a midwife, but my passion for the beauty and power of the birth process has only grown. All of my babies (2 girls, 5 boys, then another girl) were born with midwife assistance either at home, birthing center, or hospital. I have supported families welcoming their own babies in all of these settings, too, and have come to respect that birth is about more than welcoming a baby; it is the birth of a mother, a father, the birth of a family.

The support of my husband and midwives have taught me much about a woman’s needs in labor – patience, privacy, a safe and secure space, emotional encouragement, intuitive support, mental stamina, physical comfort measures… Their attention to my emotional and physical recovery postpartum have increased self-awareness, taught me to accept vulnerability and help as needed, and to embrace the transformative process of becoming a mother over and over again - throughout exhaustion, depression, nausea, migraines, fussy babies, and the unexpected. Each pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experience has been unique and taught me there is no one right way to birth or parent. It is a unique and spiritual experience, in that, it takes you to a place of finding strength and stamina you didn’t know you needed or realized you have. For me, it has been my faith in God and the non-judgmental support of those around me that has taught me to trust my body, find purpose in each stage of pregnancy through postpartum, and to treasure each season of childbearing years.

I have enjoyed breastfeeding each of my children. It is an intense time of learning to follow a baby’s lead, trust my own intuition, accept the dependence of my little ones, and find wonder in the opportunity to nourish and bond in a way only I can, as my baby’s mother. Eight children and 20 years into this journey, with a mix of toddlers to young adults and several in-between, I am still learning how to integrate the needs of a new baby into the rhythms of family life. Supporting other mothers, who desire the same, is what inspires and delights me!

While the learning as a mother began much earlier, my casual work as a birth professional began in 2008, followed by training and certification with Childbirth International in 2013-14. I work as a Trainer and Trainer Mentor for CBI and work with other birth and postpartum doulas, childbirth educators, and breastfeeding counselors around the world. I have enjoyed working with teens, single mothers, and both young and established families in my community. I have a wide range of experience and interaction with those of varying cultures, beliefs, and goals. Respecting differences and supporting parental intuition are hallmarks of my work, as I seek to bring a calm and reassuring presence to the birth journey of each family.
