Kristie's Nest
I first took an interest in all things birth in my teens, when I considered midwifery as a career. After birthing 8 children of my own, some of whom are now marrying and having babies, my respect for the beauty and power of the childbearing years has only grown. I've been married to my favorite human for 25+ years. We started our family in central Texas but after a couple of decades away from our extended family, have moved back to our roots in rural west Fort Worth. Our lives are comprised of homeschooling, managing many land and home projects on the property where my husband grew up, traveling to where life has taken our adult children, and cultivating relationships in our church and community. Some of my favorite self-care activities are gardening herbs/flowers and soaking in the the sunrise with a cup of coffee and a good book!
Each of my children were born with midwives - at home, birthing centers, and in the hospital. My midwives' model of care built my understanding of what it means to be nurtured and respected. Some of my most powerful and significant memories are in the early hours, days, and weeks after birth, where the emotions, hormones, and physiology of birth culminate. Whether a birth experience feels beautiful, traumatic, or unexpected, there is much to be treasured as a new mother adjusts to breastfeeding and bonding. How we are cared for during this season will shape our confidence and our parenting!
Whether we're welcoming our first, second, or fifth... baby, we never become experts, but we can keep learning. Many times over, I’ve learned what it means to integrate the needs of a new baby into the rhythms of daily family life. I've had to learn to listen to my body and access the nutrition and rest that keeps me fueled for motherhood and breastfeeding. I have also had several miscarriages and experienced postpartum depression, so I understand the empathy needed for these parts of women's stories. My goal is to come alongside parents and nurture their instincts and abilities to love and care for their children in the ways only they can.
With 15 years of experience supporting teens, single mothers, couples, and families through prenatal education, birth, postpartum, breastfeeding, nutritional needs, and early parenting, I am more passionate than ever about the difference that nurtured motherhood makes in our homes and in our communities! My formal training with Childbirth International has enabled me to learn alongside and mentor other birth and postpartum doulas, childbirth educators, and lactation counselors around the world. I have a wide range of experience and interaction with those of varying cultures, beliefs, and goals. Respecting differences and supporting parental intuition are hallmarks of my work, as I seek to bring a calm and reassuring presence to the postpartum journey of each family.
